PSYCHOLOGY, CULTURE AND INDIGENISATION: AN OVERVIEW FROM THE ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVE Mohamad Zaki Samsudin INTRODUCTION In its archeozoic years, modern mental science developed as the scientific study of human demeanour mainly through experiments and look conducted in the West. Results and findings from these early studies were considered popular due to the assumed intensity and objectivity of research methods employ in mental science. That effrontery was soon contested as psychological science began to become as an academic field in opposite separate of the world. The versatile theories and principles of psychology that were assumed to be habitual were straightaway examined with studies with non- occidental subjects. Variations of different levels and categories were observed in many of these cross-cultural psychological researches. These observations contributed to the growing dissatisfaction with Western psychology, which can be summaris ed into terce paradigmatic points: (1) Western psychologys decontextualised nature, (2) its leaning towards reductionism, and (3) its authority of seemly an ethnocentric science and practice (Stevens and Wedding, 2004; Khaleefa, 1997).

In plus to a more active pursuant of cross-cultural psychological research, dissatisfaction with Western psychology also inspired interest on indigenisation. Indigenisation of psychology is a continuous process of evaluation and rewrite of the philosophy and practice of psychology in accordance with the limited needs of a particular society and culture (Sinha, 1 997; Khaleefa, 2008).
